Those [relations] that are most real are forces (in the general sense of that word); others, less real, are mere comparative qualities, or, to use a single word, ratios. Let us call a thing considered as one of a pair, a relate. When the relation is a force, the relates may be called reagents; when the relation is a ratio, the relates may be called terms.
