Peirce's approach to historical inference called the Method of Balancing Likelihoods (MBL), which is the subsequent probability that a disputed historical event has occurred as determined on the basis of the prior likelihood of that event occurring and on the possibility that each witness of the event has given accurate testimony. Peirce's hierarchical criticism of this method in which he denies that the objective truth of a witness doesn't exist is considered.
